The length of the race has been reduced to 11 laps.More info at http://oceangrandprix.com/category/news-events/14TH / 15TH MAY 2ND CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTLast weekend saw the second MPA event held at St Paul's Bay in a series of 4 events for all enthusiasts of Powerboat racing on a national level. Saturday 14th was a day full of trials and practice together with safety and drivers briefing for all classes of boats while Sunday the 15th from 11 am to 5 pm saw excitement and thrills for all to see in 8 races in the various classes of boats.Both days were characterized by the good sea conditions and the numerous number of spectators that could be seen on the Bugibba seafront, most especially on the Bugibba jetty which was the wet pits area.The event was held with the kind help of Angelo's Two Bar and Restaurant the main event sponsor together with St Paul's Bay Local Council amongst other help from various contributors without which these events cannot be held.Angelo's Two was Race control and time keeping area.Comment by Francis Cachia Caruana, MPA Treasurer and RYA Race Organiser, "this event was an exceptional success for everyone involved. The MPA had alot of interest after our March event, which meant that more competitors took part, and we were pleased to have participants from Gozo. The Cybers put on a great display of their skills as did every other participant and the Committee is extremely proud of all of them as they truely waved the national flag for Malta and Gozo in regards to powerboat racing in Malta. The weather and the sea conditions were on our side, the sea a force 2-3 and brilliant sunshine of temperatures upwards of 20 degrees, which brought the spectators out throughout the two day event." His training will start at the next event, once Neville is fully trained by RYA UK Officials he will be assisting the MPA at events in the future, the MPA would like to take this opportunity to welcome him to the MPA and wish him the very best of luck.Neil Bugeja will be starting his training as an RYA Scrutineer. Neil is well known to most of our members as a competitor and he is also an excellent boat mechanic. All team agreements, inscription forms and payments must have reach Gina Micallef at the MPA office no later than the aforementioned date. The team entry agreement contains all the information that you'll need to race this season including fees, logo placements and safety wear. Team Principles will need to read this document thoroughly and pass on relevant articles to the pilot and navigator. The team entry form must be completed in full. Incomplete or blank areas may result in delayed entry to the 2011 series. If you're racing with us for the first time please feel free to contact us for additional support as you'll need your RYA training and RYA annual race license.

In September 2007 a group of individuals sharing a love for powerboat racing managed to put together the first ever national powerboat race on the Maltese shores. With help from a major international organisation, one of the top in the field, the race was run over two days and was both very well organised and well attended. On the back of this success, in January 2008 the organising committee of this race decided to set up a national championship for 2008 and therefore formed the Malta Powerboat Association, the Committee of the MPA organised a membership-driven association. The committee offered their time and expertise freely to its members while offering them the chance to race their boats in a club environment, under safe and controlled conditions. While the importance was on the participants the MPA also had a vision of wanting to promote the sport for spectators locally and internationally, this meant organising areas where the public could best view events from safely. The main aim of the association is to promote safe powerboat racing in Malta for the Maltese people. With this in mind we affiliated with the Royal Yachting Association UK (RYA), they assist in helping us train drivers and co-drivers of powerboats to be the best that they can be with safety always paramount for the participants, officials and spectators. The MPA welcomes both beginners to the sport, as well as seasoned veterans, to cultivate an atmosphere where individuals from different social-economic backgrounds and cultures may interact and share in the pursuit of this exciting recreational sport. The MPA race classes range in size, engine power and power to weight ratio. All types of boats participate.
Since 2008 the MPA has grown in members, grown in experience and grown in the world of powerboat racing. MPA Vice President Godwin Cutajar quoted the Island of Malta and Gozo has beautiful seas and has glorious weather, the people of Malta and Gozo have such spirit and determination, putting these three ingredients together and success is guaranteed. Our drivers are dedicated and are out to prove what they are capable of, hopefully with the knowledge and experience they gain from the MPA they can go forward and race internationally, the MPA know our drivers are capable of this, but drivers build their confidence through experience at events. The MPA have a four race championship taking place this year and we wish all our members good luck in these events. Mr Paul Micallef MPA Commodore says The committee of the MPA all take their duties seriously, we are all voluntary, our pleasure comes with seeing events taking place with participants and spectators enjoying activities with safety being paramount at all times At present the MPA events have attending RYA Officials from the UK who assist us in holding races. However, Maltese race officials are being trained so that Malta will have its own set of RYA Officials who can attend events thus ensuring we have an excellent Maltese team of officials behind each race.
With over 150 members and a large national and international following, Malta Powerboat Racing in Malta, for Maltese and Gozitan nationals is here to stay. The MPA Committee is here to assist you, with professionalism and with the respect that our members deserve. The Committee and the members all love what they do, and yes we are certainly proud of what we have accomplished as a membership driven organization, but none of this can be done without proper organisation and sponsorships.

MPA CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

The 2011 season for MPA is well underway. Planning and preparation for each event has started. The race schedule for this year has been published and teams are getting ready for an exciting season of Powerboat Racing. When youre racing with the same power to weight ratio setup resulting with the same boat performance the only difference between winning and losing is the teams driving abilty. The championship lets the pilots battle it out on the water through every turn and every wave jump. Its an acid test of a teams ability to command the boat through demanding conditions.The race courses are tight. And as the courses run close to the shore, the fans are in the thick of the action. The fusion of these elements creates dramatic racing and changeable race leaders, on a course that can be radically different with each lap, due to waves, wakes and spray. Races last between 30-45breathtaking minutes.Sporting Considerations 1st Place 20 points 2nd Place 18 points 3rd Place 15 points Teams compete to be the Malta National Champion An overall winner is based on the highest number of points achieved over the individual Class races

ROUND ONE

ROUND 1 - 19th & 20th March

The Malta Powerboat Club organized their first event of the 2011 season, Malta Powerboat Grand Prix, on the 19th and 20th March 2011. The event took place at San Pawl il-Bahar, Bugibba with the full backing of the local council.This event was a spectacularly successful event for participants and spectators. The wet pit area was located at Bugibba Jetty which gave spectators ample opportunity to integrate with drivers and officials. Boats were launched and weighed at this location and it was also used by drivers to commute to and from muster area. Race administration was located at Angelo's Lido, Bugibba. Again this proved to be a popular choice as spectators could ask officials questions and gather information about the day's events and upcoming events. Angelos Lido was also a prime location for viewing the race circuit, although adequate viewing was possible from Gullieru, Bugibba to the area known as Bugibba Square, Bugibba. At the same location participants who won 1st 2nd and 3rd placings in each category were award their trophies at podium presentation. Presenting awards was the Major of San Pawl il-Bahar Graziella Galea BE & A (Hons), M.Sc (Road Eng.), A.&C.E.Boat categories for this event were as follows:150hp/200hp Class225hp/250hp Class300hp ClassOpen ClassCyber ClassAll participants undergo a training programme and practice run. They are also fully equipped with RYA Approved life-jackets and racing helmets. Scrutinizing of participating boats takes place on the Saturday morning so as to ensure boats are ready for racing to RYA standards.During this event a Cyber hit a wave and could not hold control of his craft, the driver ejected safely as his boat flipped upside down. The incident was viewed at Safety Point at Angelo's Lido by the Safety Office, Mr. Oaten, who immediately contacted safety crews by VHF radios (kindly sponsored by Medcomms) on the sea to attend to the driver. Dr Martin Camilleri was aboard a safety boat and attended immediately; another safety boat carrying our diver, Mr David Foote, also attended immediately but was not needed. Mark Debono driving Cyber 24 was checked again by FAS Ambulance on-shore and was given the all clear.Paul Micallef, the MPC Commodore, stated "Our aim is to have Maltese and Gozitan participants fully trained so that they can enjoy the sport of Powerboat racing in Malta and Gozo. Safety is always paramount for participants, officials and spectators. Accidents do happen but having our participants trained and in full safety wear does lessen injuries. Rapid back-up from safety crews is also vital. Thankfully Mark suffered no injures and I would like to thank the full team of the Safety Crews for their immediate response and professionalism."The weather wasn't the best, rain and thunderstorms were forecast for most of the weekend, but this did not deter participants or spectators. Sea conditions were a force 3-4 on the 19th and 20th, which again did not hinder races.The Malta Powerboat Club is affiliated with the Royal Yachting Association Uk. Attending officials for the 19th and 20th March event from the RYA UK was Mr John Puddifoot (head of RYA UK, who took part as Commissioner and Trainer), Mr Steve Oaten (Chief Safety Officer), Mr Andrew Nelmes (Chief Scrutineer), Mrs Denise Monteith (Time keeper and event coordinator). Maltese officials at the event included Mr Paul Micallef who is a RYA registered trained Officer of the Day (OOD), and Mr Francis Cachia Caruana who is a RYA registered fully trained Secretary. Officers in training are Mrs Gina Micallef (RYA Secretary), Neville Chetcuti (Safety Officer), Neil Bugeja (scrutineer). The RYA offer their advice and training free of charge to enable Malta to have its own fully qualified race official team. I started with a small craft to enjoy the summer at the age of 18, back in 2007. I thought of getting something faster but I never knew I would go for a 13.5foot Powerboat that very same year. I saw this kind of boat call Cyber370 from Chaudron and got mad about them.RACING HISTORY:I have been taking part in these events for about 3years, this is my 4th year. This is my second cyber and improvements and good results have been achieved, I am proud to say -and this is Thanks to my family & my friends, thats why there's team written on my boat!
